National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Ranked 1st Among Greek Universities

Recently, the results of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022-2023, published by Elsevier’s Times Higher Education organization, were announced.

This ranking, along with the QS World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking), is considered one of the top three global university rankings in terms of impact and credibility.

This year, for the first time, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) ranked 1st among the 16 Greek universities included in the list, maintaining its position in the 401-500 range globally.

According to the Times Higher Education (THE) announcement, this year’s ranking features 1,799 universities from 104 countries. Greece is represented by 16 universities, two of which are ranked in the top 500 (NKUA and the University of Crete).

For the creation of this ranking, over 121 million citations from more than 15.5 million research publications were analyzed. Additionally, responses to a survey involving 40,000 academics worldwide were considered. Overall, more than 680,000 data points from over 2,500 institutions were collected and evaluated.

Results

Based on the results for Greece:

  • NKUA and the University of Crete share the 1st position among Greek universities, both ranked in the 401-500 range globally.
  • Harokopio University holds the 2nd position, ranked 501-600 globally.
  • Six universities share the 3rd position in Greece: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Athens University of Economics and Business, University of Ioannina, National Technical University of Athens, University of the Aegean, and University of Thessaly, all ranked in the 801-1000 range globally.
  • The University of Patras and the Technical University of Crete share the 4th position in Greece, ranked in the 1001-1200 range globally.
  • Democritus University of Thrace, University of Western Macedonia, and the International Hellenic University share the 5th position, ranked in the 1201-1500 range globally.
  • The University of West Attica and the Hellenic Open University share the 6th position, ranked in the 1500+ range globally.

Key Achievements of NKUA (2016-2022)

  • NKUA holds the highest research impact score among Greek universities. Notably, the university’s score in this criterion has shown consistent and impressive growth, improving by approximately 76% since 2016. This performance ranks NKUA 276th globally in research impact.
  • The university’s international reputation and outreach have significantly improved. Between 2016-2022, NKUA increased its overall score by 31%, consistently holding the 1st position among Greek universities.
  • During the 2022-2023 period, NKUA improved its score compared to the previous year in three of the five evaluation criteria.
  • NKUA is ranked among the top 15% of universities globally for the impact and influence of its research output.
