About the US News Rankings
The US News Best Global Universities Rankings were created to provide insights into how universities compare globally.
Out of all universities operating worldwide, the final list of the top 1,500 universities spans 81 countries.
The rankings are powered by Thomson Reuters (InCites™ research analytics solutions) and involve a two-step process:
- An initial pool of the best universities globally is identified.
- From this pool, the top 1,500 universities are ranked.
To be included in the top 1,500, a university must:
- Be among the top 250 universities in Thomson Reuters’ global reputation survey.
- Have the highest number of publications in the past five years, with those publications cited or reproduced by the top 200 universities in the reputation survey.
The 2019 ranking considered publications from 2013 to 2017. To qualify, a university must have published at least 1,500 research documents (articles, book chapters, etc.) during this period.
