For the fifth consecutive year, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) is ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide in the “Top Universities by Top Google Scholar Citations” ranking by Webometrics.

On January 26, 2022, Webometrics announced the results of its “Top Universities by Top Google Scholar Citations” ranking. This marks the 13th edition of the ranking, which evaluates 7,497 universities worldwide, including 24 Greek universities.

A Rare Distinction for a Greek University

The NKUA achieved a rare distinction for a Greek university, being listed in the top 100 globally for the fifth consecutive year. In the 2022 ranking, NKUA is placed 92nd worldwide and 18th in Europe.

Beyond its impressive global ranking, NKUA stands out as the 1st among Greek institutions, with 2,724,009 citations. This performance also ranks NKUA 1st among Balkan universities and 2nd among Mediterranean universities.

About the Ranking

The ranking is based on the number of citations of the research output produced by professors and researchers of each institution. The citations are identified using Google Scholar, the most popular academic search engine. Data was collected between January 10-20, 2022.

In this ranking:

  • Harvard University holds the 1st position, followed by:
    • Stanford University (2nd),
    • University of California, Berkeley (3rd),
    • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (4th), and
    • University of Cambridge, UK (5th).

Among Greek universities, the top five include:

  1. NKUA: 92nd globally, with 2,724,009 citations
  2. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki: 278th globally, with 1,194,794 citations
  3. University of Patras: 375th globally, with 861,488 citations
  4. National Technical University of Athens (NTUA): 388th globally, with 825,020 citations
  5. University of Crete: 396th globally, with 809,541 citations

Greek Universities’ Contribution to Global Research

The 24 Greek universities included in the ranking collectively account for 9,643,162 citations, representing 0.77% of global research output (1,255,795,188 total citations). Notably, NKUA’s citations make up 28.3% of the total citations of Greek universities.

In the January 2022 ranking, each university’s score was calculated by summing the citations of the top 210 faculty and researcher profiles while excluding the citations of the top 20 profiles to ensure balanced results.
