New Distinction for NKUA: 85th Globally and 15th in Europe in the Webometrics Ranking

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) ranks 85th globally and 15th in Europe in the “Top Universities by Top Google Scholar Citations” ranking by Webometrics.
Webometrics Ranking Results
On June 25, 2021, the results of the “Top Universities by Top Google Scholar Citations” ranking by Webometrics were announced.
- NKUA achieved the 85th position globally in this ranking.
- The ranking, now in its 12th edition, includes 4,234 universities, including 24 Greek universities.
In addition to its impressive global standing, NKUA holds:
- 15th position in Europe,
- 1st position among Greek institutions, with 2,537,572 citations,
- 1st position among Mediterranean universities, and
- 1st position among universities in the Balkans.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that NKUA is ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide in this ranking.
Ranking Methodology
The ranking is based on the number of citations of the research output produced by faculty and researchers of each institution.
- Citations are identified using Google Scholar, the most popular academic search engine.
- Data for the 2021 ranking was collected between June 20-24, 2021, and the final list includes universities with at least 1,000 citations.
Greek Universities in the Webometrics Ranking
The top five Greek universities are:
- NKUA: 85th globally, 2,537,572 citations.
- Aristotle University of Thessaloniki: 275th globally, 1,104,907 citations.
- University of Patras: 375th globally, 792,182 citations.
- National Technical University of Athens (NTUA): 383rd globally, 777,480 citations.
- University of Crete: 403rd globally, 738,216 citations.
Global Leaders in the Webometrics Ranking
- Harvard University ranks 1st, followed by:
- Stanford University (2nd),
- University of California, Berkeley (3rd), and
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (4th).
- University of Cambridge is in 5th place, while University of Oxford is 7th.
The remaining positions in the top 10 are occupied by other universities in the United States.
Citations Impact of NKUA
NKUA’s citations account for approximately 30% of the total citations of the 24 Greek universities included in the ranking.
- The total number of citations for Greek universities is 8,790,596, reflecting a 21.5% increase compared to the previous year.
Scoring Methodology
In the July 2021 ranking, the score of each university was calculated as the sum of the citations of the top 210 faculty and researcher profiles, minus the citations of the top 20 profiles to ensure balance.
